The formula
Tons = (Length ft × Width ft × Depth ft ÷ 27) × 1.4 tons/yd³
Example: A 50 ft × 12 ft driveway at 4 in deep = 7.41 yd³ ≈ 10.4 tons of gravel.
How it works
- 1Calculate the volume in cubic yards (area × depth ÷ 27).
- 2Multiply by ~1.4 to convert cubic yards to tons for driveway gravel.
- 3Suppliers usually sell by the ton, so order by weight.
Frequently asked questions
How many inches of gravel do I need for a driveway?
Plan for 4–6 inches total on a stable sub-grade, ideally as two layers: a coarse base (such as crusher run) topped with a finer driving surface. Soft or clay soils need more depth and a geotextile fabric underneath.
