How Many Shingles Do I Need? (Bundles & Squares)

Part of Decks, Fences & Roofing

Quick answer

Shingles are sold by the square (100 ft² of roof) and the bundle, with 3 bundles per square for standard architectural shingles. Find your roof area, divide by 100 for the number of squares, multiply by 3 for bundles, then add 10% waste (15% for cut-up or steep roofs). A 2,000 ft² roof is 20 squares — about 66 bundles with 10% waste.

Roofing has its own unit: the square, which is 100 square feet of roof surface. Shingles come in bundles, and it takes 3 bundles to cover one square for standard 3-tab and architectural shingles. So the whole estimate comes down to your roof area in squares.

The steps

  • Roof area = footprint ÷ pitch factor (a 6:12 roof is about 1.12× the footprint; steeper roofs are more). Measure the actual roof planes if you can.
  • Squares = roof area in ft² ÷ 100.
  • Bundles = squares × 3 (for standard shingles).
  • Add waste: 10% for a simple gable roof, 15% for lots of hips, valleys and cuts.

The roofing calculator turns your roof's dimensions and pitch into squares, bundles, underlayment and nails with your waste factor built in. Don't forget starter strip and ridge cap — those are bought separately by the linear foot. A bundle of architectural shingles runs about $30–$50. Last verified: June 2026.

FAQs

How many bundles of shingles are in a square?

Three. A square covers 100 ft² of roof, and standard 3-tab and architectural shingles come 3 bundles to the square. Some heavy or designer shingles run 4 or even 5 bundles per square — check the wrapper.

How many shingles do I need for a 2,000 sq ft roof?

About 20 squares, or roughly 60 bundles plus waste (≈66 bundles at 10%). Note that's 2,000 ft² of roof surface — if 2,000 ft² is your house footprint, the sloped roof is larger, so measure the actual roof or apply a pitch factor.

How much extra should I buy for waste?

Add 10% on a simple gable roof and 15% on a complex roof with many hips, valleys and penetrations. Keep a few leftover shingles for future repairs that match your color lot.
