How Much Sod Do I Need? (Pallet, Roll & Cost Guide)

Part of Landscaping & Aggregate

Quick answer

Measure length × width for the area, add about 5% for trimming, then divide by your sod format's coverage: a pallet covers ~450 ft², a 2×5 ft roll covers 10 ft², and a 16×24 in slab covers ~2.67 ft². A 1,000 ft² lawn needs about 3 pallets or 105 rolls.

Sod is sold three ways — by the pallet, the roll and the slab (piece) — and all three start from the same number: your lawn's area in square feet, plus a small allowance for trimming around curves and obstacles.

The formula

  • Sod area = Length × Width × (1 + waste %)
  • Pieces to buy = Sod area ÷ coverage per piece, rounded up
  • Pallet ≈ 450 ft² · Roll (2×5 ft) = 10 ft² · Slab (16×24 in) ≈ 2.67 ft²

Pallet coverage varies by region and grower — most hold 400–500 ft², and a few run lower. This calculator defaults to 450 ft² and lets you change it under Advanced options. A full pallet weighs roughly 2,000 lb, so it needs a truck and ideally a pallet jack to position.

How much waste to add

Sod has little waste because the pieces butt directly together with no joints. Use 5% for a straight-edged rectangular lawn, and 10–15% when there are lots of curves, trees, beds or walkways to cut around. Lay sod the day it's delivered — stacked sod heats up and yellows within a day or two.

Sod cost

Sod material runs about $0.35–$0.85 per square foot depending on grass type and region, so a pallet is roughly $158–$383. Professionally installed — including ground prep, fertilizer and labor — budget about $1–$4 per square foot. A 1,000 ft² lawn is therefore roughly $350–$850 in sod alone, or more installed. FAQs

How many square feet does a pallet of sod cover?

Most pallets cover about 450–500 square feet, though it varies by grower and region — some run as low as 400. A pallet weighs roughly 2,000 lb. Confirm the exact coverage with your supplier before ordering.

How much sod do I need for 1,000 square feet?

With a 5% trim allowance that's 1,050 ft² of sod — about 3 pallets at 450 ft² each, or 105 rolls at 10 ft² each. A perfectly rectangular lawn might get by with 2–3% waste.

Is it cheaper to lay sod or plant seed?

Seed is much cheaper up front — a few cents per square foot versus roughly $0.35–$0.85 per square foot for sod material. Sod's payoff is an instant, weed-free lawn you can install through most of the growing season, while seed needs the right season and several weeks of watering to fill in.

How much does a pallet of sod cost?

A pallet covering ~450 ft² typically runs about $160–$380 for the sod itself, before delivery and installation. Price depends on the grass type and your region.
