The formula
Tons = (Length ft × Width ft × Depth ft ÷ 27) × 1.4 tons/yd³
Example: A 20 ft × 10 ft patio at 2 in deep = 1.23 yd³ ≈ 1.7 tons of pea gravel.
How it works
- 1Calculate the volume in cubic yards (area × depth ÷ 27).
- 2Multiply by ~1.4 to convert cubic yards to tons for pea gravel.
- 3Suppliers usually sell by the ton, so order by weight.
Frequently asked questions
How deep should pea gravel be?
Use about 2 inches over a prepared base for patios and paths, or 2–3 inches for a loose ground cover. Going deeper than 3 inches makes walking difficult because the rounded stones shift underfoot.
