Stone Calculator
Enter the area and depth of your stone layer. The calculator returns the volume in cubic yards and converts it to tons (crushed stone averages about 1.4 tons per cubic yard) so you can order by weight.

Footprint
Footprint to scale
The formula
Tons = (Length ft × Width ft × Depth ft ÷ 27) × 1.4 tons/yd³
Example: A 30 ft × 12 ft patio base at 4 in deep = 4.44 yd³ ≈ 6.2 tons of stone.
How it works
- 1Calculate the volume in cubic yards (area × depth ÷ 27).
- 2Multiply by ~1.4 to convert cubic yards to tons for crushed stone.
- 3Suppliers usually sell by the ton, so order by weight.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a yard of stone weigh?
Crushed stone weighs roughly 1.3–1.5 tons (2,600–3,000 lb) per cubic yard depending on the stone size and how much fine material it contains. We use 1.4 tons per yard as a typical figure.
