Asphalt Milling Calculator
Recycled asphalt pavement — millings, or RAP — is reclaimed asphalt crushed for reuse as a driveway surface. It compacts hard and weighs about 1.45 tons per cubic yard. Enter the area and depth to get cubic yards and tons.

Footprint
Footprint to scale
The formula
Tons = (Length ft × Width ft × Depth ft ÷ 27) × 1.45 tons/yd³
Example: A 40 ft × 12 ft driveway at 4 in deep = 5.93 yd³ ≈ 8.6 tons of millings.
How it works
- 1Calculate the volume in cubic yards (area × depth ÷ 27).
- 2Multiply by ~1.45 to convert cubic yards to tons for asphalt millings.
- 3Suppliers usually sell by the ton, so order by weight.
Frequently asked questions
How much do asphalt millings weigh per yard?
Recycled asphalt millings weigh roughly 1.4–1.5 tons per cubic yard, similar to crushed stone. We use 1.45 tons per yard. They compact tightly once rolled, so order a little extra for compaction.
